Hi, I’m Mike—also known as Lit Bricks on YouTube—and I’m all about lighting up LEGO® modulars. When Light My Bricks released their new 2.0 lighting system, I knew it was the perfect excuse to revisit one of my favourite sets: the LEGO® Palace Cinema.

For this project, I really wanted to capture the magic of a classic 1950s movie theatre. The marquee was the star of the show, so when I came across the rotating effect string lights in the Light My Bricks DIY range, I knew exactly what I needed to do. I’m a big fan of cinema, and it felt only right that my LEGO® city should have a theatre worthy of the spotlight.

Lighting Inspiration

Lighting the LEGO® Palace Cinema was all about capturing the excitement of a classic movie premiere—from the animated marquee to the warm glow inside the theatre. With its dramatic facade and nostalgic charm, this set deserved a lighting setup that felt just as cinematic.

To achieve this, I used the Building Starter Pack to light the interior and front entrance. Inside, three Warm White Meteor Lights illuminate the bottom floor's ticket booth and concession area, while the upper theatre room is lit with one additional Warm White Meteor Light. These provide a soft, even glow that highlights the interior details without overpowering them. The Starter Pack also includes the Astro Lamp, which seamlessly replaces the LEGO® streetlamp and gives the sidewalk a warm, inviting ambience.

For the marquee, I went beyond the Starter Pack and added custom lighting effects. The vertical sign is lit with two Astro Light String Rotating Sequence Effect 4-LEDs in Cool White, producing a smooth, cascading pattern of light behind the trans-yellow round tiles. This gives the sign that classic theatre-style motion effect. Beneath the marquee, I installed four Astro Regular Flashing White Lights, timed to match the visual rhythm of the sign above.

To finish it off, the building’s façade is washed in warm light using four Astro Large Warm White Lights, each mounted in a spotlight assembly to cast cinematic shadows across the front. The floors are connected with Touch Plates, allowing easy removal for interior access without interrupting the lighting setup.

Together, the lighting design brings this modular icon to life—perfectly blending nostalgia, movement, and warmth for a show-stopping display.

Feature Highlights

Rotating Marquee Lights

The standout feature of this lighting setup is, without a doubt, the rotating sequence effect string lights used to illuminate the Palace Cinema’s iconic vertical sign. To capture the dynamic energy of a real 1950s movie theatre, I used two Astro Light Strings with Rotating Sequence Effect, each containing four Cool White LEDs spaced along a flexible flat cable.

Installation was simple but super effective. I started by removing the light blue plates from the vertical sign, where the trans-yellow round tiles are mounted. This made space for the two light strings to sit neatly underneath, with the LEDs aligned to every second tile. When reassembled, the LEDs shine through the yellow rounds, producing a cascading light pattern that looks like it’s in constant motion—just like a real vintage theatre sign.

To complement the vertical lights, I added four Astro Regular Flashing Lights beneath the marquee’s front edge. All the effect lights connect to a Dock 6 hidden at the back of the model, making for a clean and easily managed install.

With smooth, sequential fades and seamless integration into the LEGO® build, these rotating effect lights bring the Palace Cinema’s façade to life—making it feel like a real showpiece in any LEGO® city.
