How We Created the Light Kit for LEGO® Pokémon™ Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise

For anyone who grew up loving Pokémon, whether it was from the first Game Boy games Red, Blue, Green, or Yellow or from the anime, it is a part of your childhood that never really left. The world of Kanto, the thrill of choosing your starter, and the excitement of seeing your Pokémon grow and evolve are memories that stick. So when LEGO® released their fully-evolved starter set Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise, it was impossible not to get excited.

Especially for Jack, our resident Pokémon expert and the lighting designer for this set, this crossover had been a dream for years. When he saw the set for the first time, he said, "I felt very excited that LEGO was finally working with this franchise that I'm very attached to. I couldn't wait to try my hand at lighting it."

The Light Kit for LEGO® Pokémon™ Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise is designed to make each Pokémon feel alive, not just in how they look but how they feel in the games. Jack explained, "I wanted to add an effect to each Pokémon, and I was happy that it worked out the way it did. I tried to represent each of the Pokémon's favourite moves through lights with large pulses under Venusaur's flower to represent Solar Beam, large pulses in Blastoise's cannons to represent Hydro Pump or Hydro Cannon, and a large flickering in Charizard's mouth to represent Flamethrower."

The result is a LEGO® display that feels alive with energy, like the Pokémon are ready to battle at any moment.

Venusaur: Nature’s Command

Venusaur’s lighting starts at its flower. Large green pulses recreate the energy building for moves like Solar Beam and continue into the stand to give the sense that Venusaur is actively influencing the environment around it.

The garden around Venusaur adds extra life. Larger flowers glow pink, smaller ones violet, and the bushes at its feet are lit green. We wanted the garden to feel layered and alive to reinforce Venusaur's role as a Grass type. The variety of colours became one of the defining features of the kit, adding depth without taking attention away from the model.

Charizard: Flame of Fury

Charizard is all about movement and intensity. The tail flame has multiple flickering lights layered together to make it look natural and unpredictable. The lava fall below Charizard is lit with orange lights at different angles to make it feel like molten energy is flowing. The light in Charizard’s mouth captures the moment just before a Flamethrower is unleashed, giving it a sense of action and power.

Blastoise: Power of the Waves

Blastoise focuses on pressure and movement. The cannons have large blue pulse lights that mimic the buildup of Hydro Pump or Hydro Cannon, making it feel like energy is ready to release.

The waves beneath Blastoise use a gradient of blue, light blue, and cool white lights to create a sense of depth and flow, even though the display is static. Additional lights on the base tie the display together when all three Pokémon are shown together. We made sure this gradient was perfect from the start because it adds so much to the final look.

The Challenges Behind the Build

Creating the Light Kit for LEGO® Pokémon™ Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise was not without its hurdles. Jack explained, "The main challenges of this kit were cabling Venusaur and Blastoise's bases cleanly with as few cables visible as possible, and Charizard itself, as it is so efficiently built that finding places to put docks without compromising the structure was quite the challenge."

Every wire and light had to be carefully planned so the display feels seamless while giving each Pokémon its moment to shine. The goal was to make sure Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise all feel equally important while still working together as a cohesive display.

Designing for Display

Some design choices were essential from the start. Jack said, "I wanted at least some lights on each Pokémon, to ensure they all felt equally important. I wanted each base and each Pokémon to be modular, allowing them to be displayed separately or together. And I wanted to stick with some key lighting features once I implemented them, such as the gradient in Blastoise's wave and the lights in the flowers around Venusaur."

Pokémon bases displayed separately

Flexibility was key. Each Pokémon and its base needed to work both as standalone pieces and as part of the full trio. Once features like Blastoise’s wave gradient or Venusaur’s garden lights were added, they became essential to the final design and helped define each Pokémon’s identity.

Staying True to Pokémon

Jack drew inspiration from both the games and the anime. He said, "I looked at the animations and models of each of the Pokémon from several of the games, and rewatched some episodes of the anime to get a general sense of what to light up, but I'm familiar enough that it was mostly unnecessary."

Even with years of experience, he checked back to make sure the lights would feel right. In the end, it was all about familiarity. After spending so much time with these Pokémon, you already know how they should feel in action.

The result is a display that captures the spirit of the Pokémon. Solar Beam pulses in greens, Flamethrower flickers with fiery intensity, and Hydro Pump builds tension in blues and whites. Every lighting choice ties back to moves and moments fans instantly recognise.
