Hi! I'm Will, a lighting designer here at Light My Bricks. Now, I’ll admit—I’m not the biggest fan of off-roading or towering 4x4s, but I do love cars. So when I had the chance to light up the LEGO® Icons Land Rover Classic Defender 90 using our DIY components, I was all in. What made this project really exciting was the set’s modular add-ons like the bull bar and roll cage, which opened up some awesome extra lighting opportunities.
Lighting Inspiration
I started with the essentials: the base vehicle setup. For the headlights, I went with Warm White Large Astro Lights to reflect the era of the Defender—giving it that classic ‘90s look with a powerful, slightly vintage glow.
At the rear, I added Red Astro Regular Lights for the tail lights. These are concealed behind Plate, Round 1x1 - Trans-Red from our Transparent Brick Pack, creating a clean and authentic finish.
Inside the cabin, I kept with the warm theme, installing two Warm White Regular Astro Lights. These are fitted beneath Plate, Round 2 x 2 with Rounded Bottom (Boat Stud) - Trans-Clear, softly lighting up the interior and enhancing the retro charm.
All of these lights are powered through a Dock 6 mounted beneath the chassis. It’s a tidy little setup that connects to a 50cm Belt and Flux Converter for easy power access. This forms the complete base lighting using just the Vehicle Starter Pack—perfect if you're keeping it simple without the additional accessories.
Now for the Fun Add-Ons
The Defender really comes to life with its optional accessories.
First up is the bull bar. I grabbed an extra DIY bag and installed two Cool White Astro Regular Lights beneath the front-mounted lamps. Since the bull bar is an aftermarket-style accessory, I chose a modern cool white tone to contrast sharply against the warm white headlights. These lights run to a concealed Dock 6 in the engine bay, which links back to the main dock using a 30cm Belt.
Then there’s the roof-mounted roll cage. I used the remaining Cool White Regular Astro Lights —four in the front overhead lights and two more in the rear. These are connected to another Dock 6 hidden beneath the tray. Cable management here could’ve been a mess, but with the help of our Eclipse cable bundler, everything stays neatly routed. A 30cm Belt runs cleanly down the roll cage to the base of the vehicle, plugging directly into the chassis dock and completing the setup.
All lit up, the Defender looks seriously impressive. The warm, classic interior lighting contrasts beautifully with the crisp, modern overhead cool whites—it’s a rugged, stylish build that stands out day or night.
Feature Highlights
Base + Accessory Lighting
At its core, the base lighting setup already transforms the Land Rover. The warm headlights and vivid red tail lights, all powered through a discreetly mounted Dock 6, give the model a grounded, authentic look. You could stop here and still have a great display.
But the real fun starts with the accessories.
Each add-on—bull bar and roll cage—is lit with modern cool white lights, all powered by their own dedicated Dock 6 and seamlessly connected to the base system. This modular setup means everything stays clean and functional, with no compromise to the build or playability.
A special shoutout goes to the cable management under the roll cage tray. It’s only possible thanks to the Eclipse, which keeps everything tightly bundled and tucked away. It’s those kinds of finishing touches that make this build not just lit—but professionally polished.
