Hi, I’m Megan from Light My Bricks. As a huge anime fan, I was thrilled when LEGO® announced their new ONE PIECE sets—especially The Going Merry. I loved the live-action adaptation, and lighting up this iconic ship was a chance to bring even more personality to an already fun build. While it’s marketed as a kids’ set, with the right lighting touches, it easily becomes a standout display piece for any fan.
Lighting Inspiration
Designing the lighting for the Going Merry was all about enhancing its personality and turning it into a standout display piece. Even though this is a set aimed at younger builders, the addition of just a few carefully placed lights transforms it into a centrepiece worthy of any anime fan’s shelf.
The deck is brought to life with three warm white spotlights that shine upward onto the sails, creating a striking display effect that draws the eye and adds presence to the ship. These lights emphasise the height and silhouette of the model and creates a display effect that draws the eye and adds presence to the ship.
Inside, subtle lighting continues the effect. A warm white LED is mounted inside each of the lamps in the crew’s cabin, casting a gentle glow that brings warmth and life to the interior. Another warm white light in the kitchen highlights the detailed accessories and makes the space feel alive—just like it would be with Sanji hard at work.
All playable features of the set remain completely intact. Thanks to clever routing and component choices, the lights don’t interfere with access to the interior or the ship’s moving parts. It’s a simple yet effective lighting setup that shows just how impactful a few DIY components can be.
Feature Highlights
Warm White Spotlights
The spotlights on the Going Merry’s deck are both simple and effective. These are built using:
- A 1x1 Tile with Open O Clip
- A 1x1 Round Plate with Bar Handle
- A Large Warm White Astro Light, mounted inside a 1x1 Round Plate with Open Stud
These components come together to form compact spotlights that blend in seamlessly without distracting from the model’s design. Positioned perfectly, they cast upward light on the sails for a subtle yet cinematic effect.
Assembly Walkthrough

Start with the Astro Large Light – Warm White 30cm.
Gently remove the label tag and thread the plug end through the open stud of the 1x1 round plate. -
Orient the light.
Adjust the LED so it faces upward once inserted into the plate -
Add structure.
Attach the 1x1 modified plate with bar handle to the back, followed by the 1x1 modified tile with open O clip. This allows the spotlight to be connected easily onto the set. -
Repeat.
Follow this process two more times so you have three spotlights, and position them on the deck, pointing up at the sails for some dramatic lighting.
